The Super Mario Brothers series has been a very popular video game franchise since the early 1980s. Mario was originally created by Nintendo's video game designer Shigru Miyamoto in 1981, and his first appearance was in the game Donkey Kong, where it was his job to jump over barrels to battle the giant ape.

Mario and his friends have since appeared in more than 200 video games of a variety of genres, including platform games, puzzle games, and even RPGs (Role Playing Games). Most Mario games involve the Italian plumber and his brother Luigi rescuing Princess Peach from the evil Bowser (or King Koopa as he is known in Japan). Along the way, they typically explore many unique worlds, battling Bowser's minions with a combination of high jumps, fireballs, and occasionally other interesting powers. Their enemies include a wide variety of strange creatures, from the lowly easily-stompable Goomba, to the clever Spiny-throwing cloud rider Lakitu.
